Welcome to another edition of “Ask Charla.” At Astrology Answers I receive questions from all over the world about love and relationships, chakras, tarot, astrology, numerology—if it’s metaphysical, someone has asked about it.
Are we born with a Life Path Number and can you explain how it works?
Great question. Numerology can feel complicated until you understand the basics. Terms like life path, soul path, and hidden passion might seem confusing, but they become clearer once you know what they measure and how they are calculated.
Your name can change over time, but your date of birth never does—so your life path number (LPN) is fixed for life. The life path number is one of the core numbers in numerology and reveals the main lessons and themes you’re likely to encounter during your lifetime.
Finding Your Life Path Number
The life path number is calculated from the numbers in your birth date. There are several methods to compute it; this is a straightforward approach that avoids common inconsistencies.
First add the month and the day of your birth and reduce that sum to a single digit. For example, for a birth date of September 18, add 9 (September) + 18 = 27, then reduce 2 + 7 = 9.
Next add that single-digit total to the digits of your birth year. If the year is 1986, add 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24, then reduce 2 + 4 = 6. Combine that result with the reduced month-day total to reach your final life path number. In the example above, the month-day reduced to 9 and the year reduced to 6; 9 + 6 = 15, and 1 + 5 = 6, so the life path number would be 6.
Some calculators combine the entire date first (month, day, year) and then reduce, which can lead to the same result. If you prefer an automated tool, you can use a life path calculator to confirm your number.
Note: when the final result is 11, 22, or 33, you do not reduce further. These are Master Numbers and carry special significance in numerology.

Conclusion
Your life path number is a central piece of your numerology profile, but it’s only one aspect of who you are—similar to how your Sun sign is only part of your astrological birth chart. Other core numbers and planetary cycles also shape your personality and life lessons. Still, the LPN offers a valuable lens into your core purpose and the themes you’ll likely navigate throughout your life.
