Along our spiritual journey, we often talk about ascension, spirit guides, and the highest version of ourselves. But what exactly is the highest self, and how can we tell if our daily practices are actually guiding us toward that state?
The higher self is the part of us that exists in its brightest, most expanded expression — a state of clarity, compassion, and alignment with purpose. This is the level of being that enlightened teachers throughout history have exemplified. When we are connected to our higher self, we move from a place of alignment with our deeper purpose and act with a clearer sense of direction. With so many terms in use — awakening, enlightenment, ascension — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by information and the emotional shifts that occur as we raise our vibration.
So how do you know you’re making progress and connecting with your highest self?
Here are several signs that indicate you’re on the right path in your ascension journey:
1. You experience synchronicities.
Synchronicities are meaningful coincidences — subtle confirmations that your inner state is aligning with your outer reality. When your thoughts and emotions are attuned to your intentions, you begin to notice patterns, repeated numbers, timely encounters, or helpful insights that feel like winks from the Universe. These moments suggest heightened awareness and an elevated vibration.
2. You want to learn more about yourself and life.
Spirituality and personal growth go hand in hand. Progressing toward the highest self involves curiosity and ongoing study — learning how you operate, exploring healing tools and practices, and listening to others’ perspectives. If you regularly seek new knowledge and reflect on your experiences, you are expanding in ways that support your evolution.
3. You’re breathing deeply.
The breath is a fundamental tool for balancing mind, body, and spirit. Conscious breathing moves energy through the system and calms the nervous system — even three deep breaths can reset your state. Practices like alternate nostril breathing help harmonize left and right brain activity. When you prioritize mindful breathing or meditation, you create space for the soul to communicate and for insight to arise.
4. You practice mindfulness and compassion in interactions.
The highest self responds from a place of unconditional love and empathy. Much of the human process involves shifting from reactive thinking into a heart-centered way of being — showing patience, understanding, and compassion even toward those who challenge us. You don’t need to be perfect; steady, mindful effort deepens this capacity over time, much like training a muscle.
5. You allow new experiences, people, and emotions.
Surrendering to life’s flow opens doors to unexpected lessons and blessings. When you start saying “yes” to new opportunities, relationships, and feelings, you invite growth and align with the unfolding of your path. Embracing novelty signals trust in the guidance available to you.
6. You create space for healing.
Living consistently from your highest self requires clearing old wounds and releasing limiting patterns. If you make time for self-reflection, therapeutic work, energy healing, workshops, or coaching, you’re investing in your ongoing transformation. Honoring this inner work is a vital part of maturation.
7. You choose love over fear, even when it’s difficult.
Many of our early choices were shaped by conditioned fears. Moving toward the higher self means learning to act from courage and love rather than from survival-based reactions. Choosing love doesn’t mean being naive — it means making decisions that align with compassion and integrity more often than not.
The path can feel long, and it’s easy to fall into “destination thinking” — believing you must reach a particular state before you can be content. When doubt arises, return to the breath and remember that progress unfolds in Divine timing. You are exactly where you need to be, learning what you need to learn. Stand tall, keep your face toward the light, and continue with steady, loving intention.
