The Moon and its energies exert a subtle but powerful influence on our lives. Its cycles shift emotions and moods—the New Moon invites fresh starts and new intentions, while the Full Moon encourages release and the shedding of stagnant energy.
Moonstone is a crystal that seems born of lunar light. Made of albite and orthoclase, members of the feldspar family, moonstone appears in transparent and opaque forms, ranging from soft lunar grays to crystal-clear tones with flashes of brilliant blue. That shimmering, blue-white glow is caused by a phenomenon called adularescence.
Long associated with heightened intuition and lunar sensitivity, moonstone amplifies the Moon’s energies and works especially well in tandem with lunar rituals and practices.
Getting to Know Moonstone
In Indian legend, moonstone was believed to be implanted in the forehead of the god Ganesha. Hindu stories describe the stone’s glow as moonbeams made tangible, granting clairvoyant insight to those who wore or worked with it. Because of its sacred status in some traditions, moonstone was traditionally displayed on yellow cloth, a color regarded as holy.
Ancient Asian lore held that moonstones washed ashore only once every 21 years. It was thought to support abundant harvests, restful sleep, and to be most potent when worn on Mondays—the day governed by the Moon.
Moonstone was also seen as containing a living spirit, a protective energy believed to ward off misfortune associated with the number 13. For this reason, it became a customary gift for 13, 26, and 39-year anniversaries. In ancient Greece, moonstone was linked to Diana, the Moon goddess, and likewise thought to have formed from moonlight.
Moonstone in Lunar Rituals
Moonstone is valuable when used with lunar cycles and enhances the effectiveness of Moon rituals. It helps sharpen focus and deepen intuitive awareness—qualities cultures have relied on for thousands of years.
New Moon Rituals
The New Moon supports new beginnings, planting seeds for intentions you wish to grow during the coming cycle. Moonstone can empower any New Moon ritual. A simple New Moon practice might include two pieces of moonstone and a stick of incense performed in a quiet outdoor space under the New Moon. Solitude tends to make this work most effective.
Full Moon Rituals
- a stick of incense
- an incense holder
- a lighter
- a pen and paper
- a bowl of water
- your moonstone pieces
- Find a comfortable, level surface. Light your incense and allow its cleansing smoke to wash over the space. Incense can help thin the veil between worlds—place it in its holder.
- Write your intentions, goals, or desires for the upcoming lunar cycle on paper. Fold the paper and set it aside where it feels safe.
- Hold a piece of moonstone in each palm, close your eyes, and meditate on the goals you recorded. Use several minutes to focus and amplify your intentions.
- When you feel ready, take the folded paper, light one edge, and watch the smoke rise as you visualize your intentions manifesting during the month.
- Extinguish the paper by placing it in the bowl of water. Once the paper is fully out, pour the water into the soil, imagining your intentions planted as seeds in the Earth.
Full Moon energy tends to amplify feelings and heighten intuition. It’s a time for release and renewal. Many Full Moon rituals exist for different purposes; the ritual above is designed to strengthen your intuitive connection and can be performed from three days before the Full Moon through the night of the Full Moon.
Using Moonstone Anytime
Moonstone isn’t limited to ritual nights—you can work with it whenever you need clarity or a stronger connection to lunar energy.
- Identify a situation or experience that needs clarification.
- Meditate on the scenario for several minutes, opening your mind and heart to possibilities and guidance.
- Place a small piece of moonstone beneath your tongue for a brief period.
- Visualize the matter clearly and meditate on possible outcomes.
- Remove the stone and notice the thoughts that arise. Are there familiar insights or a clear inner voice guiding you? Pay attention to those impressions.
- If no clear guidance appears, consider returning to the practice under a different lunar phase or after a period of reflection.
While moonstone shines in Moon rituals and reflects natural lunar cycles, it can be used at any time to attune to the Moon’s influence. Whether you work with it in formal rituals or in quiet personal moments, moonstone can assist with intuition, emotional balance, and spiritual insight.
