There’s been a lot of recent chatter about zodiac Sun signs shifting—and the reality is that they do change from time to time.
These shifts occur more often than many people realize, and they’re not the result of mistakes. Your Sun sign can vary because of the Sun’s apparent path, the Earth’s axial wobble, and other astronomical factors.
This is especially true for people born near the solstices and the equinoxes, since those dates can shift from year to year as the Earth’s orbit isn’t perfectly exact. That’s why a reputable astrologer will ask for your exact time and place of birth when casting your birth chart.
Time Zones & Seasonal Clocks
Consider time zones: when it’s 2:00 AM in London, it’s 8:00 PM the previous evening in New York City. A child born at the same exact universal moment in each city will have two different local dates of birth because of that time difference.
Seasonal clock changes add another layer. Some places move clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, and not all regions change on the same dates—or at all. That means the time difference between the same two cities can vary by hours depending on the season, which can affect the recorded birth date and therefore which zodiac sign is assigned.
Living On the Edge
If your birthday falls at the moment signs change, you’re considered to be born “on the cusp.” With an accurate time and place of birth, an astrologer can determine which sign you are. Astrology uses degrees (similar to longitude and latitude), so if you’re on the cusp of Virgo, you may still be Virgo—yet a birth a few minutes later could make you Libra.
Babies born at the same instant in different time zones can share the same zodiac placement even though their local calendar dates differ. This explains why your Sun sign might vary across horoscopes and astrology sources, and why precise birth time and location matter for a complete chart.
If you were born on a cusp and don’t know your exact birth time, a practical approach is to read both signs. Cusp births often reflect a blend of two signs’ qualities, even when an exact time places you solidly in one or the other.
Part of the variation comes from the fact that Earth’s orbit is not a neat 365-day cycle. It takes about 365 days and 6 hours for the Earth to orbit the Sun, which is why we add a leap day every four years. Those additional hours cause the dates of equinoxes and solstices to shift over time. Because these seasonal markers determine the start of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, shifts in those quarter-day positions also affect the transition dates for Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, and Sagittarius.

You Are Unique
Discrepancies among birth charts are also influenced by the choices astrologers make: different house systems, ephemerides (astronomical tables), and calculation methods can yield slight differences.
Still, while your Sun sign might appear inconsistent across various readings, you are not. You are unique and irreplaceable.
